    モノの本では、「レコードをもっていなくてもいいアーティスト」だの「歴史上まったく問題にならない……」だのと批評されることが多いが、なぜか登場頻度は高い。まるで酷評されるために存在するような黒人アルト・サックス奏者、それがソニー・クリスだ。
    実のところ、巧さばかりが前面に出たアーティストであり、深みに欠ける部分も確かにある。例えるなら、手作りの味のある陶器ではなく、少し派手めの大量生産される白いティー・カップみたいなもの。……だが、“綺麗”なアルトの音で、チャーリー・パーカー（as）ばりの黒いフィーリングを湛えたビ・バップを演奏し、フレーズも泉のように次々と繰り出す手腕があるのだ。また、そういったプレイには実直で真面目な彼の性格が非常によく表れているといえるだろう。
    日本での人気は高く、レコード屋でも発売されれば必ず売れるという。特に『ゴー・マン』（56年）はジャケットが良い＝演奏内容が良いという方程式を実証しているアルバムといえる。アルト・サックスの教科書として必聴したい。
