ファッツ・ドミノと並ぶニューオリンズR&Bジャイアント。恰幅のいい体つきにニンと笑った豪快そうな顔つき——これだけでその音楽性がわかろうというものだが、ブッとい声で歌い飛ばすような男気ジャンプ・ナンバーは、否が応にも血が騒ぐ。
スマイリー・ルイスが活躍したのは主に50年代で、所属レーベルが＜インペリアル＞、バックをつけたのがデイヴ・バーソロミュー楽団、とファッツとの類似点が多いのだが、シャウターとしては格段に上を行く。重量級のパンチを繰り出しながらも、三連バラードではメランコリックが零れ落ちるような歌唱を聴かせるあたりも魅力。とにかくニューオリンズ・サウンドを最大限に体現した人物として絶対に忘れられない存在だ。
代表曲は「I Heard You Knocking」「The Bells Are Ringing」など。「One Night」はエルヴィス・プレスリーにカヴァーされたことで有名だ。
