    73年に、ジャクソン・ファイヴの女性版、もしくはスリー・ディグリーズの子供版の線を狙ってデビューした４人組姉妹グループ。
    彼女たちの魅力が開花するのは、70年代後半に飛ぶ鳥を落とす勢いだったシックのナイル・ロジャース＆バーナード・エドワーズに出会ってからである。彼らがプロデュースした「He's the Greatest Dancer」「We Are Family」といったナンバーは、ディスコ・ブームの追い風もあり、大ヒットを記録。しかし、単なるディスコ・チューンと思うなかれ……。ロジャースの革新的なギター・カッティングとエドワーズの常習性の高いベース・ライン——という"シックイズム"が浸透したバック・サウンドに、姉妹のエレガントな歌唱が絡むナンバーの数々は、ディスコ〜ソウルという枠組みを超えた陽性のポップ・チューンとして機能。現在でもその"効力"は弱まるどころか、ヒップホップの大ネタとして君臨すると同時に、昨今のフリー・ソウル・シーンでも絶大な人気を誇っている。
