    主演映画『SLAM』がサンダンス映画祭のドラマ部門でグランプリを獲得、一躍注目を浴びた孤高の詩人ソウル・ウィリアムズ。そんな彼はMCとしても知られている。とはいえ、一般的な“ラッピング”とは多少趣が異なり、やはり、ポエトリー・リーディングやスポークン・ワードのマナーに則ったものが大半を占めている。最初のレコーディングは前述の『SLAM』のサントラ収録に収録されている、KRS・ワンをフィーチャーした「オーシャン・ウィズイン」。その後、何枚かのシングルをリリースするが、なかでもドラムンベースのクラストと共演した「コーディド・ランゲージ」（99年）は約９分に渡る長尺のアブストラクト・ナンバーであり、好事家を中心に話題となった。
    そして01年、待望のデビュー・アルバム『アメジスト・ロック・スター』をストリートに解き放つ。ここでは、ヒップホップ／アブストラクト／アンビエント／ロック……など、さまざまなサウンド・エレメントが展開されている。が、バンドを従えているためか、トラックはよりミクスチャー・ロック色が色濃いものに仕上がっていると言えるだろう。そこにウィリアムズの、フレキシブルな口調のポエトリー・リーディング／シンギングが重なり、作品全体に終末的／破滅的な雰囲気が漂っている。さらに04年にはセルフ・タイトルのアルバムもリリースし、アーティスト活動の堅調ぶりを世間にアピールした。
