    Roland Alphonsoローランド・アルフォンソ

    まさに、ジャマイカ音楽史の"キーパーソン"というべき役割を担っていた偉大なサックス・プレイヤー。スカの時代以前からコクソン・ドットの＜スタジオ・ワン＞でR&Bのコピーなどを作曲しながら、テナー（及びアルト）・サックスをプレイしていたアーティストだ。スカの誕生に深く関わったミュージシャンの１人であり、スカタライツの中心的メンバーでもあった。
    そのジャズの流れを汲んだ甘やかでスモーキーなサウンドは、雄々しくエッジの効いたトミー・マコックのテナーと至上のコンビネーションを生み出し、他の追随を許さない。また、この当時の音源は、アルバム『Best oh Roland Alphonso』『Ska Strictly For You』『Ska Au Go Go』などで聴くことが出来る。
    スカタライツは活動期間わずか２年で65年に解散し、ローランドはそのまま＜スタジオ・ワン＞に残ったスカタライツの残党とソウル・ブラザーズを結成。スカ後期〜ロック・ステディ期の＜スタジオ・ワン＞を支えた。こちらも短命なバンドではあったが、『hot shot』『carib soul』と２枚のアルバムを残していることからも、その人気と実力のほどが窺える。
    その後、一時音楽活動から遠ざかっていた時期もあったものの、80年代には折からのスカ・ブームの追い風を受けてスカタライツを再結成し、再びライヴ、レコーディング活動を開始。日本初の本格ダブ・バンド、ミュート・ビートとも共演し、アルバムを残している。このような活動は、2001年、彼がスカタライツと共演するステージ上で倒れ、息を引き取るまで続いた。
