シカゴ・ブルースマンの中でも異色の存在。スライド・ギターを得意とするが、どちらかというと戦前シティ・ブルースの香りがプンプンする。それもそのはず、ナイトホークのアイドルはタンパ・レッドであり、戦前はロバート・リー・マッコイの名でアコースティック・ギターにスライド・バーを滑らせていた。そして戦後はエレクトリックに持ち替え、その技術に一層磨きをかける。48〜50年に録音された＜チェス＞時代の「Annie Lee Blues」「Sweet Black Angel」を聴いてみて欲しい。語尾を振るわす独特の歌声、そして夜の街角に立つ娼婦のような妖しさを発するスライドの音色……。ダークな艶やかさをもつブルースだ。
