    伝説のロバート・ジョンソンの義理の息子であり、シカゴ・ブルース黄金時代を裏から支えた名セッション・ギタリスト。
    20年に渡る裏方家業を務めた後、初のリーダー作を発表したのが72年、なんと60歳近くの時……。しかし、そのアルバム『ステディ・ローリン・マン』は、現在でもブルース100選などで必ず選ばれる名盤。その特徴は、ジャズを取り入れた多彩なバッキングにある。デルタ・ブルース・スタイルを継承しながらもテンション・コードを多用し、クールな視点と高度なミュージシャン・シップで伝統と革新を絶妙なバランスで同居させ、ブルース＝プリミティヴという概念を覆した。以後も12弦ギターを取り入れるなど、モダンなブルース感覚を発揮。
    現在80歳だが、老いてなお盛ん！　日本にも度々来日している。
