    アーリア人以外を毛嫌いし、反ユダヤ主義だったワーグナーの音楽と思想は、ヒトラーに大きな影響を与えたことで有名。また、音楽史上もっとも斬新で美しく、壮大なオペラを創りだした人物でもあり、フランツ・リストやリヒャルト・シュトラウスの交響曲と共に、後期ロマン主義と近代音楽の掛け橋となった。
    彼のオペラは非常に意欲的で大人数のキャストと巨大なオーケストラ——そして大量の特殊効果まで取り入れていた。この大仰な演出はファンの間では好評だったが、イタリア人作曲家による素朴でシンプルなオペラを好む人々からは激しく非難されもした。
