Ray Conniffレイ・コニフ
16年11月６日、米マサチューセッツ生まれ。幼い頃より父親からトロンボーンを習い、通信教育で楽曲アレンジを学ぶ。大学卒業後の34年にボストンのバンドに、36年にはトロンボーンニスト／アレンジャーとして、バニー・ベリガン楽団にそれぞれ参加。そして、ボブ・クロスビーのボブキャッツで活躍後、アーティー・ショー楽団に４年在籍した。
その間、レイ・コニフは「Concerto For Clarinet」「Dancing In The Dark」「St James Infirmary」をレコーディングし、成功を得るが（この間に、彼はジュリアード音楽院で音楽理論を学んでいる）、第二次大戦後はハリー・ジェームスと組みアレンジャーとして活躍。その後、フリーランスで仕事をするようになったが、この時期はヒット曲をプロデュースする法則を模索していたとも言えるだろう。
54年にはコロムビア・レコードに入り、ジョニー・レイ、ローズマリー・クルーニー、ガイ・ミッチェル、マーティー・ロビンズらの作品に携わり、ドン・チェリーのミリオンセラー・シングル「Band Of Gold」のプロデュースも手がけている。
56年にはいよいよソロ・アルバム制作のチャンスを手に入れ、『'S Wonderful』を発表。オーケストラをバックに、コーラス、ハミングなどが洒落た感覚でアレンジされ、そこに各々の楽器の音色が絡む——。このスタイルは、音楽界に新たな潮流を呈示する作品となったのだった。また57〜68年の間には、なんと28枚ものアルバムをUKトップ40へ送り込んでいるのだから、いかに彼が卓越したメロディ・メイカーかがわかるだろう。
代表作に、ミリオン・セラーとなったアルバム『Somewhere My Love』（66年）や映画『Doctor Zhivago』（65年）のサウンドトラックよりシングル・カットされた「Lara's Theme」（USシングル・チャート・トップ10入り）などがある。
珍しいところでは、74年に『Ray Conniff In Moscow』を発表。アメリカ人初のロシア・レコーディングを行ったポピュラー・ミュージシャンとして記憶されることとなった。
