Philly Joe Jonesフィリー・ジョー・ジョーンズ
フィリー・ジョー・ジョーンズはバップのドラム奏法の基礎を築き、50年代にマイルス・デイビスと活動したことで知られるアーティストだ。バディ・リッチやマックス・ローチに比べると派手さはないが、ビートを刻みながらリム・ショット(別名 ビーバップ爆弾 )を挿入るスタイルや、バックでの即興演奏を得意とするドラマーだった。これを個性として、チャーリー・パーカーやベン・ウェブスター、ディジー・ガレスピー、クリフォード・ブラウンなどと演奏、そしてその後マイルス・デイビス・クインテットの一員として迎え入れられたのだ。（クインテットがのちにセクステットになった時もメンバーだった。）60年代と70年代にかけてはビル・エヴァンズ、チェット・ベーカー、デクスター・ゴードン、そしてセロニアス・モンクなどといったジャズ界の名士たちと演奏を続けた。彼の多彩なスタイルはバップ、クール・ジャズ、そしてアヴァン・ジャズにも完璧にマッチしたのだ。
