    Pharoah Sandersファラオ・サンダース

    ジョン・コルトレーン（ts）の死後、後継者として一番名乗りを挙げたサックス奏者がファラオ・サンダースだ。それもそのはず、コルトレーンの晩年に行動を共にしていたのだから。
    力強いブロウ、スピリチュアルな演奏、長いフレーズと極端に短いフレーズを組み合わせたグニャグニャ・ラインが特徴であるファラオ。60年代のN.Y.で頭角を現し、同業のアーチー・シェップ／アルバート・アイラーらと共にフリー・ジャズの旗手として活躍していた。そして65年、コルトレーン・グループに抜擢され、彼の下で学ぶ——。以後、コルトレーンより過激にフリー・ジャズを追求し、パーカッションを取り入れた民族音楽的なジャズを響かせ続けている。
    個人的にお薦めなのは『Welcome To Love』（91年）と『Crescent With Love』（92年）だ。両作ともバラード集であり、他の前衛作品とは一線を画す内容。彼の非凡なメロディ・センスが窺い知れる。
