Paul Simonポール・サイモン
そのソロ・キャリアを通じて、ポール・サイモンは世界中のさまざまな民族音楽のスタイルを歌ってきた。音楽的な興味と個人的なヴィジョンを一致させてきた甲斐もあり、サイモンのミックス・カルチャーな活動は成功を得てきている。アート・ガーファンクルと別れた直後、彼はステファン・グラペリやディキシー・ハミングバーズ、ロス・インカスとレコーディングを済ませた。70年代後半から80年代初期にかけての作品からは、彼が良質なコカインと悪質なワインで名高い、その時代のダークな感情面を打ち出そうと探索しているところがうかがえた。86年の『グレイスランド』では北米に南アフリカのポピュラー音楽を紹介し、喜ばしくも転機を迎えた作品となる。その頃からサイモンの音楽的冒険はスタートし、その最近のひとつとしてはブロードウェイのステージ用の作曲があげられるだろう。しかし、どんな方向に進もうが何をしようが、彼の音楽にはサイモン＆ガーファンクル時代からのフォーク・ポップの心がいつでも脈打っているのである。
