サンフランシスコ出身のポール・デスモンドの発言の一つに、「自分のサキソフォンでドライ・マティーニのような音色を出したい」というものがある。これはソフィスティケイトされた都会派で、ウィットに富み、実に魅力的なデスモンドのプレイをうまく言い表しているといえよう。彼はピアニストのデイヴ・ブルーベックと組んでから本格的な成功を収め、二人は右に出る者がいないほどの名コンビとなった。デスモンドのサックスから生まれる素晴らしい即興フレーズは叙情性を有し、ブルーベックがそこに鍵盤を使って先進的な音楽理論をもち込んだ。
