    イングランドの貧しい家庭に生まれたノエル・カワードは本来はイギリスの上流階級が得意とすることを彼ら以上にうまくやってのけて見返すことに成功した。カワードは常に如才ない、多才なルネサンス的教養人であり、現在でも広く上演されているウィットに富んだ演劇作品や短編小説を執筆したほか、俳優や映画監督としても活躍、そして何百という素晴らしい曲を作り上げた。彼のすがすがしい毅然とした語り口は『Beatnik Love Affair』や『Why Do the Wrong People Travel』などの作品に最も顕著に現れている。イギリスのポップ・カルチャーの象徴のようなノエル・カワードの劇作の多くはアメリカ人が演じるとその面白さが失われてしまう感が否めないが、彼の作った「I'll See You Again」、「If Love Were All」そして「Mad About the Boy」といった曲のほうはいずれもアメリカのジャズ・アーティストやキャバレー・シンガーたちに広く演奏されている、心動かす哀歌なのだ。ビロードのスモーキング・ジャケットとアスコット・タイに身を包むことを好んだカワードは『生活の設計』という、彼自身の人生を総括するかのようなタイトルの脚本を執筆している。彼は今日の誰もかなわないほどリッチな生活を自分のために「設計」したのだ。今のイギリスでノエル・カワード・リバイバルが起きているのも当然だろう。
