    自称“ソング・スタイリスト”（独自のヴィジョンと表現力をもつ歌い手）のナンシー・ウィルソン。なんか高ビーなオバちゃんに思うかも知れないが、その履歴は素晴らしい。
    15歳からプロとして活動を開始し、58年にN.Y.へ進出。キャノンボール・アダレイ（as）の後押しもあって、同年、『ライク・イン・ラヴ』でデビューを飾る。艶やかな歌声とハスキーなヴォイスを上手にコントロールしながら、ヴィヴィッドな表現をする彼女。一躍人気歌手の仲間入りを果たし、60年代は１年間に２、３枚というハイ・ペースでアルバムをリリースした。また、ジャズにこだわらず、R&B／ゴスペル／ポップスなど幅広いレパートリーをもち、多くのファンを掴む。64年には『ハウ・グラッド・アイ・アム』でグラミーの最優秀R&Bアルバム賞を受賞している。70年代に入るとリリース数は減ったものの、TV番組『ザ・ナンシー・ウィルソン・ショウ』でエミー賞／エボニー・マイク賞を獲得し、スターの地位を不動のものに。以後もトップの座に君臨し続け、90年には栄誉あるハリウッドの＜ウォーク・オブ・フェイム＞（歩道に手形とサインが刻まれ、大スターの証しとされるアワード）に選出された。
    最近ではその躍動感ある歌声に安定感が増し、風格もそなわってきた。現存するジャズ・シンガーの中で最重要であることは間違いない。
