    N.W.A.エヌ・ダブリュー・エー

    イージー・E、アイス・キューブ、ドクター・ドレー、MCレン、アラビアン・プリンス、DJイエラという、どんなワルでも太刀打ちできないほどの強面たちで結成された“Niggaz With Attitude＝N.W.A.。彼らは、ウェスト・サイド、いや、全米のギャングスタ・ラップ・シーンを語る上で、避けては通れない草分け／雛型的存在である。
    彼らは自身の作品のなかで、銃／麻薬が当たり前のように氾濫するゲトーの日常や、警察に対する高圧的な態度を表した過激なリリックを披露した。それらは、例えばスマッシュ・ヒット・シングル「ファック・ザ・ポリス」（89年）がFBIから発売禁止の勧告を受けるなど、いたるところで物議を醸したのである。またトラックは、一様に暴力的で荒々しい曲調で、さらにサイレン音や銃声などのおどろおどろしい演出効果が施されている。それらが威嚇するようなハード・ラッピンと相まって、曲全体にただならぬ緊張感が漂うのだ。結果、そのセンセーショナルな内容のためか、実質的デビュー・アルバム『ストレート・アウタ・コンプトン』は空前の大ヒットをマーク。N.W.A.はヒップホップ・ヒストリーにその名を刻むことになったのである。
    だが、そんな彼らの絶頂期はそれほど長くは続かなかった。金銭トラブルから89年にアイス・キューブ、91年にはドクター・ドレーと、次々にグループの要が脱退してしまったのだ。その後、リユニオンの計画もあったが、95年にイージー・Eが死去し、残念なことにその希望は永遠に叶わなくなってしまった。
