    60年代、サイケデリックの震源地サンフランシスコは、グレイトフル・デッドをはじめ、ジェファーソン・エアプレイン、ジャニス・ジョプリンなど、たくさんのグループ／アーティストが輩出されたが、なかでも別格扱いだったのがモビー・グレープである。フォーク、カントリー、ブルース、R&B、サイケデリック……と多彩な要素が凝縮された音楽性は、３本のギターと３声コーラスが特徴の高度な演奏力も相まって、アマチュア・レベルだった他グループとは一線を画した。特に、めったにない完璧なデビュー作『Moby Grape』（67年）と２nd『Wow』の２枚は、自由な気風のサンフランシスコ・ルネッサンスの象徴として今も語り継がれる大名盤。しかし、シングル５枚同時発売や盛大なリリース・パーティなどの誇大宣伝が逆効果に作用し、商業的には大失敗。おまけにメイン・パーソンであったスキップ・スペンスのドラッグ中毒による入院なども重なって、活動は下降線を辿り69年には解散してしまう。後に何度か再結成するが、その度に裁判沙汰に巻き込まれるなど非常に不運なグループだった。
    そんなこともあって、同時代のグループと比べると知名度は低いが、音楽レベルは遥か上を行く。日本では、はっぴいえんどの元ネタとして知られている。
