    ソーシャル・ディストーションのリーダー、マイク・ネスは、カントリーやブルースに激しいパンクを融合させているが、ラモーンズやセックス・ピストルズよりも、ジョニー・キャッシュやローリング・ストーンズからの影響が強い。20年間続いたソーシャル・ディストーションに17歳から参加していたネスの初期の試みは単純で反体制的、日頃の生活の苦悩を歌い上げる音楽だった。82年にリリースされたアルバム『マミーズ・リトル・モンスター』は大成功し、凶暴なギターとソリッドなバック・ビート、そして誠実な歌詞が彼ら独自のサウンドとなった。短期間の投獄生活を体験した後、しらぶになったネスは以前よりも意欲的に活動を開始、グループと同名のアルバムを発表し、ヒットさせる。アルバムでジョニー・キャッシュの「リング・オブ・ファイア」をカヴァーするなど、ネスを形成した音楽はグループにも影響を及ぼした。ネスの最新ソロ・アルバムではトレードマークの分厚い音圧を持たず、よりシンプルなサウンドに徹しているが、彼の強烈なオーラは健在だ。
