名実ともに頂点を極めたデスティニーズ・チャイルドより、先陣を切ってソロ・デビューを果たしたミッシェル・ウィリアムス。02年にリリースされた初ソロ・アルバム『ハート・トゥ・ユアーズ』では、なんとゴスペルにアプローチ。とはいっても、そこは数字を残さなければならないスーパー・アイドル・グループのメンバー。トラディショナルなスタイルに終始するわけもなく、ちゃんと今風R＆Bのプロダクションをキッチリと取り入れて、ポップ・アルバムとしても完成度の高い作品に仕上げている。ハデさはないが秀逸なこのアルバムは全米ゴスペル・チャートで見事１位を獲得。続く、04年のソロ２nd『ドゥ・ユー・ノウ』も同路線を踏襲。あくまでコンテンポラリーでグルーヴィなサウンドでありながら、自身の信仰心を根幹に据えた、深い精神性が満ち溢れるゴスペル・アルバムを作り上げている。そこにゴージャスさや華々しさは希薄だが、清らかさや可憐さといったクリアな魅力を彼女は持っている。
