    UKソウルを代表する歌姫。89年にデビューを飾り、ラキムのラップをフィーチャーしたスウィートなグラウンド・ビート・トラック「Contribution」（90年）で、その名を知らしめる。しかし、93年のアルバム『Whisper a Prayer』では、アメリカナイズされた音を求め（求められ？）、プロデュースにナラダ・マイケル・ウォルデンやロッド・テンパートンを迎えて制作。「Two In a Million」という名曲が生まれるものの、米国的R&Bサウンドは彼女の資質とはミスマッチに終わる。そして５年間のブランクを経て発表された『Black Angel』——再びUKソウル・シンガーとしてのアイデンティティを取り戻した傑作をモノにした。クールでストイックな佇まい、そして肉感的な歌唱が魅力のシンガーだ。
