    ドラマーのマックス・ローチは、スウィング・バップ、アヴァンギャルドの時代を生き抜き、ジャズという音楽の大動脈を形成してきた。42年、弱冠18才にしてデューク・エリントン・オーケストラに参加。その後トランペッターのディジー・ガレスピーに出会い、最初期のビバップのリズム・パートを模索しながら創り上げた。ローチはポリリズムを初めてジャズにもち込んだパイオニアでもあり、54年トランペットの巨匠クリフォード・ブラウンと共に自身のクインテットを結成し一時代を築く。しかしクインテットは、ブラウンとピアニストのリッチー・パウエルの交通事故死という悲劇をもって解散。以後、ローチは数えきれないほどのバンドを率い、多くのポスト・バップやアヴァンギャルド系のプレイヤーと共演した。つねに新しい表現を模索する彼は、作品に政治的テーマをとりあげ、パーカッションのみのアンサンブルを主宰し、マルチ・メディア作品でダンサーやビデオ・アーティストと共演した。また最新のコンボでは、しばしば弦楽四重奏とも共演している。
