    トム・ペティやビッグ・スターを彷彿させるパワー・ポップ・バンドとして、80年にシカゴから現れたマテリアル・イシュー。彼らは３ピースでありながら音の軽さを感じさせない力強いバンドであった。ねじ込むようなギターのパワフル・コードから生み落とされるエモーショナルかつストレートなメロディは、近年のパワー・ポップの原型ともいえよう。また、シューズのジェフ・マーフィーをプロデューサーとして起用した時期もあり、試行錯誤しながら自らのスタンスを築き上げていったのがわかる。US産パワー・ポップの代表格としてコンピレーション・アルバム『イエロー・ピロウズ』シリーズに数多く参加。精力的に活動を続けていたが、96年、バンドの中心的存在でありソングライターでもあるエリソンの自殺によって、その歴史に幕を降ろした。
