    80年代後半から90年頃までに、当時としては最先端のいわゆる“フューチャリスティック・エレクトロ・ファンク”でパーティ・シーンのみならず、ワールドワイドにミュージック・シーンを席巻したカーティス・マントロニック。彼は、他に類を見ない力技かつ斬新なビート・アレンジを見せてきた実験的アーティストのひとりである。
    マントロニクス＆MCティーとしてキャリアをスタートさせたマントロニックは、クラフトワークの硬質なテクノ・ポップや、当時N.Y.から新生して間もないラップ、R＆B、さらにはソウル／ファンクなどのテクスチャーを巧妙に融合したサウンド・メイキングを創出。そのハイブリッドな制作曲はいたってシンプルだが、実に壮大なスケール感を誇っていた。その後、自身が牽引するグループ＝マントロニクスとして『マントロニクス：ジ・アルバム』（85年）を発表。ヘヴィーなヴォコーダーを用いたラップと、まるでサイボーグ同士の決闘のようなグルーヴを見せるトラック群で、世界中のパーティ・ピープルを欠かさずダンス・フロアへと導いた。と同時に、世界中の音楽シーンで好ヒット・チャート・アクションを見せ、その名前を世界中に知らしめた。
    マントロニクス（及びマントロニック）の音楽は、日を追うごとにどんどんとコンプレックス・サウンドと化し、また進化した。もちろん、その根底にはサンプリングされたネタが生々しく脈打っているわけだ。さらにマントロニックは、EPMD、T．ラ・ロック、ドクター・オクタゴン、デュラン・デュラン、フューチャー・サウンド・オブ・ロンドン、布袋寅泰……など、数え切れぬほど多くのアーティストたちにリミックス・ワークを提供してもいる。とにかく、斬新かつ異形の音像を創り出すカーティス・マントロニックは、音楽シーンのパイオニアであり、革命児であり、素晴らしいサウンド・デザイナーなのである。
