    ヒップホップとブルース。一見、あまり接点がないと思われるが、ソルト・ン・ペパがサンプリングした「Tramp」はブレイク・ビーツの大ネタとして有名。ロウエル・フルスン作のファンキー・ブルースの傑作だ。
    フルスンのルーツはカントリー・ブルース。しかし時代ごとにヴァーサイタルな感覚を発揮して、さまざまなレーベルに録音を残している。40年代から50年代にかけてのウエスト・コーストのレーベルへの吹き込み。この時代には後に一大スタンダードとなる「Every Day I Have the Blues」が生まれ、「Reconsider Baby」のヒットを飛ばした50年代からの＜チェス＞録音。次に来るのが64年からの＜ケント＞での活躍。ここでは前述した「Tramp」が空前のヒットとなった。
    その魅力といえば、大ナタで切ったようなザックリとしたギター・プレイに枯れた味わいの歌。特に、弾きまくることより難しそうなツボっぽいギターは、B.B.キングやマジック・サムへの影響も大だ。
    70年代以降もモダン・ブルース・マンとして数々の作品をリリースし現在に至る。老いてますます盛ん。
