    Little Walterリトル・ウォルター

    この男を知らずして、ブルース・ハープは語れない。ハーモニカをアンプに突っ込んで鳴らし、ブルース・シーンに革命を起こしたリトル・ウォルター。
    米国南部はルイジアナ州生まれであるウォルターは、ティーンエイジャーにしてシカゴに住みつき、40年代後半にマディ・ウォーターズのバンドに参加。以降、親分の下で奔放なプレイを披露し、シカゴ・ブルースにおけるハープの役割を決定付けた。そして52年にはソロ・デビュー。「Juke」を皮切りに「My Babe」「Mean Old World」などのヒットを放ち、マディと人気を二分するまでに成長する。
    そのフレージングを聴けば、元ネタがサックスにあることは明白だが、アンプによって増幅された音色は、ディストーションをかけたエレキ・ギターに匹敵する暴力性を感じられるだろう。後のハーピストに与えた影響も大きく、数えきれないほどのフォロワーを輩出した。
