    ジャズ／ソウル・ピアニストと呼ぶべき存在のレス・マッキャン。その活動は、ピアノを叩くだけでは飽き足らず、歌もうたって新人の発掘も行うという風の吹くまま、思うままであった。
    ピアノはブルース・フィーリングを湛えながらも、どこか幻想的雰囲気をもったプレイを展開。59年から64年までが最もジャズらしい時期だ（代表作は『ザ・トゥルース』『ザ・シャウト』）。その後、ジャズにラテン／８ビートの要素を導入、R&Bナンバーのカヴァーなども行い、より娯楽性の高い道を歩む。きっとコムズカシイことを云うジャズに嫌気がさしたのだろう。自身の気持ちを素直に表現できる方法を選んでいった。そして、ひとたびマイクを握れば、黒人独特のソウルフルなダミ声が飛び出し、それに際限なく明るいピアノが彩りを添えるのだ。
    また同時に、彼は“ニュー・ソウルの父”と賞賛される人物。ロイ・エアーズ、ジャズ・クールセイダーズなどの発掘に直接／間接的に関わり、ロバータ・フラックも彼が精力的に育てた。これらのアーティストの音楽進路は個々それぞれだが、根っこには、黒人らしくマッキャンらしいドロくささをプンプンさせている。——そして彼自身も、いまだ元気に世界のどこかでマッキャン節を謳い続けているのだ。
