    20世紀を代表する偉大な指揮者。そして、また、アメリカが生んだ最大の音楽家でもある。躍動感に満ちたフレッシュな演奏で人気があり、時には指揮台の上でジャンプするほどの激しいアクションも見せていた。マーラーを好んで採り上げ、現在のような人気作曲家の地位へと押し上げた功績も大きい。また作曲家としても、交響曲やバレエ／ミュージカルなどを多数作曲し、その斬新なメロディ感覚と大胆なリズムは、クラシックのみならずジャズやポピュラー界からも大絶賛された。
    1918年マサチューセッツに生まれ、カーティス音楽院に学ぶ。43年にニューヨーク・フィルの副指揮者となり、急病のブルーノ・ワルターの代役として指揮台に上り大成功を収める。偶然ラジオでこの演奏が中継されていた幸運も加わり、各地のオーケストラから客演依頼が殺到する存在となった。58年にはニューヨーク・フィルの音楽監督に就任し、69年まで務め上げた。その後はヨーロッパに拠点を移して活躍、カラヤンと並ぶ指揮界の巨匠となる。
