Leadbellyレッドベリー
レッドベリー（本名はハディ・ウィリアム・レッドベター）は、アメリカ音楽の歴史をつくり上げた偉大なアーティストのひとりである。ブルーズ・ミュージシャンと紹介されることが多いが（もちろんその一面もある）、彼は60年代のプロテスト・フォークの始祖とも呼べる人で、そのラインはさらにブルース・スプリングスティーンやビリー・ブラッグまで繋がっていく。40年代、レッドベリーはさまざまな伝承歌に形を与えて、それらを都市部に住むの白人たちの前で歌い、アメリカが抱える不正や誤りを訴えたのだ。その一方、ウッディ・ガスリーと同じようにラヴ・ソングやコミック・ソングも得意で、とくに子供たちの前で歌う時の彼は素晴らしかった。広く正当に評価されたのは彼が亡くなってから10年以上たってからのことだったが、もちろん今からでも遅くはない。多くの人が真剣にその歌に耳を傾ければ、彼も報われるはずだ。
