    ハーモニカという楽器をアメリカの裏通りからコンサート・ホールに持ち込んだラリー・アドラーは、ブルースの領域をはるかに越え、ジャズのインプロヴィゼーションやクラシックの構造を「マウス・オルガン」で表現した、洗練された稀有なミュージシャンである。20年代のヴォードヴィル界でキャリアを開始後、ブロードウェイと映画の世界に進出、ガーシュウィンの音楽には欠かせない存在となった。そのエレガントなサウンドは、シンフォニー・オーケストラや、ジャンゴ・ラインハルト、デューク・エリントン、ディジー・ガレスピーといったジャズ・アーティストとも完全にかみあった。スターとしての名声を手にいれたアドラーだったが、マッカーシーの「アカ狩り」の嵐のなか48年に共産主義者として政府のブラックリストにのせられ、ヨーロッパに逃れることに。53年のイギリス映画『ジュヌビエーヴ（邦題「おかしなおかしな自動車競争」）』の音楽を担当しアカデミー賞にノミネートされた時も、クレジットは匿名になっている。その後、93年にスティングの「シェイプ・オブ・マイ・ハート」に特別参加し、アドラーの名前が新しい世代に紹介されるきっかけとなった。
