    ルース・ブラウンと並んで50年代のR&Bを代表する女性シンガーに数えられる。17歳の時にリトル・ミス・シェアクロッパーという名前で歌いはじめ、53年に＜アトランティック＞と契約。その後、数々のヒットを放ちロックンロール黎明期のスターとして活躍した。その魅力といえば、野太い声を張り上げるようにして歌う唱法だ。特にジャンプ・ナンバーでみせる迫力いっぱいの黒っぽさには圧倒されること間違いなし！　また、60年代ソウルを先取りした感覚も聴き逃せない。
    ちなみにエルヴィス・プレスリーは彼女をアイドルとし、「See See Rider」「Saved」をカヴァーしている。
