    ジョン・トロペイは、70年代のN.Y.フュージョン・シーンを席捲したスーパー・ギタリスト。どのようなサウンドにでも自分のプレイを溶け込ませ、実力を発揮できる優れたセンスの持ち主だ。こんなに器用な人はナカナカいませんよ。
    73年のデオダートのアルバム『ツァラトゥストラはかく語りき』における切り裂くようなギター・カッティングとワイルドなソロで、一躍注目を浴びる。そして、その幅広い音楽性と確かな実力で、ジェームス・ブラウン／アストラッド・ジルベルト／ポール・サイモン／リンゴ・スター／マイケル・フランクスなど、多くのアーティストをサポートする縦横無尽の活躍をみせた。75年にはウィル・リーやマイケル・ブレッカーと共に、初リーダー作『トロペイ』をリリース、好評を博す。以降、現在に至るまで、リーダー作をマイペースに発表しつつ、あらゆるレコーディング／バンドに参加。——面白いところでは、92年にべンチャーズ・ナンバーを完全コピーで演奏するという超絶企画アルバム『ハイパー・べンチャーズ』を発表している。
