    60年代後半に、バート・ヤンシュと似たようなフィンガーピッキング・スタイルを武器に、ロンドンのフォーク・シーンから登場したジョン・マーティン。最初の数枚のアルバムは静かでブルージーな内容で、彼のトレードマークであるガラガラ声をうまく引き立てていた。そして、『ブレス・ザ・ウェザー』（71年）と『ソリッド・エアー』（73年）の２枚のアルバムで、生涯を通じてのカルト的な人気を獲得することになる。これらのレコードはどちらも、彼の声を楽器として最大限に活かし、エコーを目一杯かけたアコースティック・ギターと、ジャズに強く傾倒した楽曲が土台を支えていた。たしかにニック・ドレイクやリチャード・トンプスンといったかつての仲間たちの方がより熱狂的で幅広い人気を得ていたが、マーティンの音楽とそのキャリアは滅多に見ることのできない永続性と高潔さを保ち続けている。
