    パット・メセニーやジョン・スコフィールドなど、現在のトップ・ギタリストから最大の尊敬を受けている巨匠。
    57年に『ジャズ・ギター』でデビュー後、エラ・フィッツジェラルド（vo）、ポール・デスモンド（as）、ソニー・ロリンズ（ts）らとの共演で名脇役の評価を得る。そして、69年の２作目『イン・ベルリン』で独自のスタイルを確立した。喋っているようなリズムと間をもつフレーズ、コード感重視のソロ展開とクールな音色——まさにギター美の極致である。
    以後、次々とリーダー作を発表し、現在では30枚近くに及ぶ。イージー・リスニング的響きでポピュラーな人気を獲得した『Conciert』（75年）、エフェクターやシンセを多用した『All Across The City』（89年）、編曲に力を注いだ『By Arrangement』（98年）など、いずれも創意に溢れている。昨今ではパット・メセニーとのデュオ・アルバム『Jim Hall & Pat Metheny』が好評を博した。
