    ジーザス・ジョーンズが80年代末の音楽シーンに呈示したサウンド・スタイルは革新的であった。バンドのフロントマンであるマイク・エドワーズが「ロックはもう時代遅れだ！」とメディアに噛みつき、投げつけたのはテクノ／ハウス／ヒップホップ、そしてロックをシェイクした音のコラージュである。同時期に出現したストーン・ローゼズやハッピー・マンデーズがレイヴ・シーンと密接な接点をもち、日本で言うところの「おマンチェ」ブームの立役者となるなか、ジーザス・ジョーンズはより幅広い聴衆を求めた。ビートが効いたグルーヴ感十二分なバック・トラック、タテにヨコにと揺さぶりをかける攻撃的かつスムーシーなギター……なかでも、実験的・革新的志向に止まらずUKならではのトラディショナルなポップ・メロディを楽曲に反映させたことが、彼らを成功に導く要因となったのも忘れてはならない。
    91年にリリースされた『ダウト』は、全米でも支持され100万枚以上のセールスをあげたが、よりコアな音楽性を突きつめた次作『パーヴァース』では惨敗。以降、作品に対するキレが悪く、またマイク・エドワーズのワンマン色が強くなるなど、バンドは不安定な状態に——存続の危機が囁かれている。
