プログレッシヴ・カントリーのパイオニア、ジェリー・ジェフ・ウォーカーのもっとも有名なヒット曲は「ミスター・ボー・ジャングル」だろう。なめらかな声で幾層にも織り込まれたカントリー・ソングを歌い、"パーティ・アニマル"という風評が多くの信者を生んだ。ニューヨーク出身のウォーカーは70年代にテキサス州オースティンに居を構え、偉大な故タウンズ・ヴァン・ザント、ガイ・クラーク、レッド・ヘッド・ストレンジャー、ウィリー・ネルソンらと交流を深める。ウォーカーの音楽活動はニューヨーク・ヴィレッジのフォーク・ロック・バンド、サーカス・マキシマムから始まり、バンガード・レーベルから数枚のアルバムを発表した後、68年に解散。71年、ニッティー・グリッティー・ダート・バンドはウォーカーの「ミスター・ボー・ジャングル」で大成功を収めたが、ウォーカー自身は73年に、クレイジーなカントリー・ミュージック・バンド、ザ・ロスト・ゴンゾ・バンドとのレコーディングでゴールド・ディスクを獲得した。ベストヒット・アルバム『ヴィヴァ・ターリンガ』では、クールで快い弦の響きに乗せて彼の本領であるカウボーイ・ラメントを歌い上げている。
