    ハモンド・オルガンを得意とするジェイムス・テイラー率いるジェイムス・テイラー・カルテット。80年代後半からイギリスで爆発的に盛り上がったアシッド・ジャズ・ムーヴメントの牽引者的存在である大御所グループだ。
    スムーズでハードなグルーヴが身上の彼らだが、オルガンを大フィーチャーしたレイドバック気味のサイケ・サウンド／リラックスしたフィーリングが快感のソウル・ナンバー／ホーンを駆使した快活なジャズ・ファンクまで、さまざまなヴァリエーションをもっている。どのナンバーも思わず身体が揺れてしまう密度の高いバック・ビートで一貫され、ノエル・マッコイの実は骨太なヴォーカルも爽快。
    ブルージィでアーシーではあるものの、60年代にはどちらかといえば泥クサい印象のあったハモンド・オルガン——それをヒップな位置にまで押し上げた功績は大きい。来日も頻繁で、クラブ・ライヴの評価も高いが、作品においては93年に発表された『スーパーナチュラル・フィーリング』が、特に名盤との声が高いようだ。
