James Moodyジェイムス・ムーディー

25年２月26日、アメリカ・ジョージア生まれ。
サックスを10代半ばから始めたジェームス・ムーディーは、米軍での任務中にミュージシャンとしての能力を開花させた。46年には除隊し、テナー・サックス奏者としてディジー・ガレスピー率いるビッグバンドに正式参加。ここでは主にアルト・サックスを演奏しながらツアーに同行し、腕を磨いている。また、49年にレコーディングされた「アイム・イン・ザ・ムード・フォー・ラブ」は何故か３年後にヒットしたが、この作品が彼の評判を一気に上昇させるきっかけとなったのは言わずもがなだろう。
50年代には、R&B志向のバンドを含むいくつかの小グループをリードし、＜Argo Records>でもレコーディング。そしてこの時代には、フルート演奏も開始している。
60年代に入ると、アメリカのクラブ・シーンや国際フェスティバルなどでは欠かせない存在となり、ソニー・スティット、ジーン・アモンズと共にスリー・テナー・バンドに参加。なお、この時代（63〜68年）には再びガレスピーとの演奏を再開し、素晴らしいコラボレーションを残していることを忘れてはならない。
手にする３つの楽器すべてにおいて、旋律の際立ったプレイを見せ、類まれなソリストぶりを発揮している彼だが、＜Novus＞に移籍し、90年代に突入してもその手腕は衰えることをしらない。
