    ハリー・ジェイムスは弱冠21才にして、トランペットでベニー・グッドマンの名声にまで昇りつめてしまった。自身で39年にバンドを作り、多少の苦労はしたものの、最終的にはハードなスウィング・スタイルに甘い味をつけて人気急上昇。気がついたら40年代を代表する優れたバンド・リーダーとなっていた。いつもトップのミュージシャン（バディ・リッチ、 スタッフ スミス）、そしてトップのヴォーカリスト（フランク・シナトラ、ディック・ヘイムズ、ヘレン・フォレスト）を使い、足のきれいな女優ベティ・ゲーブルと結婚した後は、ハリウッドの顔にもなった。50年代に入りあちこちでビッグ・バンドが息切れしはじめた時には、賢明にもサウンドを強化して、バップの時代においても成功をおさめる。いい時も悪い時もいつでも人の前に立ってラッパを鳴らすのが得意だったというわけだ。
