    ハロルド・アーレンは、ティン・パン・アレイや映画音楽、そしてミュージカルの世界にジャズの手法や感性を持ち込むという面においては、ガーシュイン以上に大胆だった。アーレンは偉大なるフレッチャー・ヘンダーソンのアレンジを手掛けていたが、後にコットン・クラブの専属作曲家に就任。やがては、ハリウッドとブロードウェイに同時に進出を果たした。彼はジョニー・マーサーやアイラ・ガーシュインなどといった最高の作詩家と一緒に仕事をし、さらにはイップ・ハーバーグと一緒に『オズの魔法使い』のスコアを書いている。歌詞がついていようがいまいが、そのかけがえのないメロディの数々はジャズ・ミュージシャンたちのお気に入りである。アーレンは軽快な心地よい歌声の持ち主でもあり、デューク・エリントンとのレコーディングも残している。
