    ほんと、こういう声をもっている人って得難い。しなっとしたヨレヨレ・ヴォイスで、歌が上手いってわけじゃないんだけど、深い憂いを秘めているっていうのかなぁ……、条件反射的に涙腺が緩んでしまう。
    ジーン・クラークは、フォーク・ロックの立役者、バーズのオリジナル・メンバーとして「Feel a Whole Lot Better」「She Don't Care About Time」といった優れた楽曲を残すものの、ロジャー・マッギンとの権力闘争に敗れ、わずか２年で独立。67年にソロ・デビューを果たすが、69年に兄弟ブルーグラス・バンド、ディラーズの長兄ダグ・ディラードとディラード＆クラーク・エクスペディションを結成し、ブルーグラスとロックの融合を目指す（１stはカントリー・ロックの名盤）。そして71年、名うてのスライド・ギタリスト、ジェシ・エド・デイヴィスをプロデューサーに超のつく名作『White Light』を制作。泥臭いL.A.スワンプ・サウンドが、ジーンのシンプリシティを極めたソングライティングを見事に引き出した。
    その後も、オリジナリティ溢れるフォーク〜カントリー・ロック・ワールドを展開するが、商業的な成功を手にすることはできなかった。91年に心臓発作により死去。その墓碑銘には、74年のアルバムから取られた『No Other』と刻まれている。
