    弱冠13歳にしてジョニー・オーティスにスカウトされ、"リトル・エスター"の芸名で世に送り出される。そしてジョニー・オーティス楽団をバックに吹き込んだデビュー作「Double Crossing Blues」（50年）が大ヒットを記録し、一躍"早熟の天才少女"として注目を集めた。その後60年代には、エスター・フィリップス名義でR&Bシンガーとして活躍。70年代にはジャズやファンク、そしてディスコまでをも取り上げ、クロスオーヴァーなシンガーとして新境地を開いた。少しカン高くクセのある歌声とダイナミックで粘っこい唱法が魅力である。
    84年に死亡。
