    キーボード・プレイヤー兼アレンジャ−のヴィンス・クラークは、デぺッシュ・モード、ヤズー、アセンブリーのメンバーとして活躍。85年に自らのプロジェクトを立ち上げた。オーディションの結果選ばれたアンディー・ベルとともにエレ・ポップ・デュオ、イレイジャーを結成。クラークが作・編曲とキーボードを、アンディーが作詞及びヴォーカルを担当する。86年にシングル「Sometime」がU.K.チャート第２位を達成し、87年には２ndアルバム『The　Circus』がトップ10に入るヒットを記録。時代の先端を行くエッセンスをエレクトロニックに取り込みながら、印象的なメロディを奏で、同時期に台頭してきたペット・ショップ・ボーイズのライバル的存在となった。90年代に入ってもその勢いは衰えず、アルバム『The Innocents』『Wild!』『Chorus』『I say,I say,I　say』はいずれもU.Kチャート第1位に輝いている。さらに、92年にはアバのカバー集『ABBA‐esque』をリリース。ここで彼らの遊び心やアレンジャ−としての才能を存分に証明したといえるだろう。
    頻繁なリリースによって人気を確立したが、急速な成功によるプレッシャーから一時期は活動休止状態に陥ったこともあった。が、多くのニュー・ウェーブバンドが消えていった中、結成当時のコンセプト／スタイルを変えずに第一線で活躍していることは驚嘆に値する。
