    Don Nixドン・ニックス

    41年にメンフィスで生まれたドン・ニックスは、ティーンの頃からサザン・ソウルの名門＜スタックス＞に出入りし、同級生であったスティーヴ・クロッパーやドナルド"ダック"ダンらと共にマーキーズを結成。グループではサックスを担当し、63年にはR&Bインストの名曲「ラスト・ナイツ」のヒットを放った。そんなプロフィールからもドンの存在は白人のソウル〜ブルースの体現者として注目を集め、ジェフ・ベックやJ.J.ケイルが彼の作品を取り上げ、またプロデューサーとしてもデラニー＆ボニー、ベック,ボガート＆アピスを手掛けることに……。
    ソロ・アーティストとしては、盟友レオン・ラッセルのレーベル＜シェルター＞から70年に『In God We Trust』でデビューを果たす。そして翌年には『Living by the Days』を発表。１st同様、マッスル・ショールズで録音されたこのアルバムは、頭のてっぺんからツマ先までドップリ浸かったようなスワンプ・サウンドと上手くはないがコクのある歌唱が、南部特有の湿った空気のなかで溶け合った傑作である。その後も＜スタックス＞から佳作『Hobos Heroes & Street Corner Clowns』（74年）をリリースするが、70年代後半には低迷。重度のアルコール／ドラッグ中毒にも陥り80年代には名前を聞かなくなってしまう。しかし、94年に15年ぶりの新作『Back to the Well』で突如復活。地に足のついたルーツ・ロックを聴かせ、健在ぶりをアピールした。現在はナッシュヴィル郊外でソングライターとして活躍している。
