    父子家庭に育った彼女は、大学卒業後にニューヨークで歌手としてのキャリアを歩み始め、39年にラジオ局の専属となりデビューのきっかけを掴む。その黄金時代は40〜50年代で、「Buttons and Bows」「The Gypsy」「I'll Walk Alone」などのミリオン・セラー・ヒットを放ち、ソフィスティケイトの極致といった感のあるムーディなヴォーカル・ワークで一時代を築いた。
    一方で彼女は新しいメディアにも常に積極的で、TV創生期の50年代初期には自分のTVショウ、70年代にもトーク・ショウをもち、どちらもロングランを記録。生き馬の目を射抜く米国ショウ・ビジネスの世界を80年代まで生き抜いた。
    とにかくアメリカン・ドリームの体現者としても、アメリカを代表するポピュラー・シンガーとしても、永遠に人々の記憶に残る存在である。
