    ナッシュヴィルの名セッション・ギタリスト、フレッド・カーターJr.の娘である。しかしながら親の七光りとはいかずに、デビューしたのが29歳の時という遅咲きぶり。それまでは、他に仕事をもちながらナイト・クラブで歌っていたという苦労人なのだ。下積みが長い分、デビュー時にフォーク・ポップ寄りの作風は完成しており、彼女の清楚で可憐な歌唱が収められた１stアルバム『Did I Shave My Legs for This？』はたちまちのうちにチャートを駆け上がる。続く２nd『Everything's Gonna Be Alright』も大ヒットを記録し、カントリー界を代表する新しい世代の女性シンガーとなった。
    01年のクリスマス・アルバム『Father Christmas』では、念願の親子共演を果たしている。彼女の歌にピッタリと寄り添うような父親のギターが印象的だ。
