    サブリミナル・キッドとしても知られるDJスプーキーは、NYのイルビエント・ムーヴメントの火つけ役であり、ダンス・ミュージックを知的な方向に移行させ、世間一般に高い認識を与えることに大きく貢献した才人である。グルーヴ感を残しつつネタを切り刻んでひとつのビートに繋ぎ合わせていく彼の音楽は、非常に洗練されていて都会的。だが、時としてアグレッシヴに、時としてダークかつへヴィに、その姿を変貌させる。彼の音楽に通底しているのは、アンビエントさ、ミニマムさ、そしてスペーシーさ。つまりイビツで混沌としたスピーキー・サウンドだ。
    また、彼はサウンドを自分が思い描くイメージ／世界観になるべく近づけるために、常に難解な知識や音ネタを探求している。そんなスプーキーが継承するのは、KRS・ワンといったヒップホップの教祖的ライム・スタイルや、ボム・スクワッドらの卓越したサンプリング技術。そこに彼は、バロウズのような小説家からの影響が垣間見られる知識を色づけしていくのだ。彼はその不気味かつ軽快なビートで人々をダンス・フロアに引き寄せておきながら、結果的には複雑怪奇な音や雰囲気でその期待を痛快に裏切っていく。誰もスプーキーを予測することはできない。
