    Con Funk Shunコン・ファンク・シャン

    オールドスクール・ファンク勢のなかでも確固たる地位を占めるヴォーカル＆インストゥルメンタル・グループ。
    ブレイクしたのは70年代後半だが、その歴史は意外と古く、68年にカリフォルニアで結成され、後にメンフィスに南下。そこで＜スタックス＞のセッション・ミュージシャンの仕事を得、映画『ワッツ・タックス』にもバック・バンドとして参加している。そして正式デビューを飾るのは73年。以降77年の２nd『Secrets』から80年の『Spirit of Love』まで、４枚連続でゴールド・ディスクを獲得し旺盛を極めた。彼らの音楽性の魅力といえば、その柔軟性にある。まるでドゥーワップ・グループのようなスウィート感覚溢れるバラードに、「Too Tight」「Chase Me」に代表されるようなアップ・テンポのファンク・チューン、時代にスリ寄らず70〜80年代を生き抜いたのは決して偶然ではなく、長い下積みから培った高いポテンシャルにあるのだろう。
    グループは80年代後半まで活動を続けるものの、リード・ヴォーカルのマイケル・クーパーが脱退したことにより失速。現在では、時おり再結成しライヴ活動を行っているようだ。
