    Cameoキャメオ

    70年代の“USファンク戦国時代”に登場して以来、ドス黒いファンク・ミュージックをブチかまし続けるキャメオ（まだまだ現役だ！）。時流を読むことにかけては右に出るもののいないラリー・ブラックモンを中心にして結成されたグループである。
    そんなキャメオは70年代後半に『カルディアック・アレスト』でデビューを飾る。その初期においては、ホーン・セクションを含む大所帯のバンドとして躍動感溢れるファンク・サウンドを展開。80年の『キャメオシス』で彼らは、ソリッドなリズム・セクションと変幻自在のヴォーカル・アレンジが拮抗し、さらにシンセサイザーがグビグビとうねるキャメオ・スタイルを確立させた。
    しかしその後、デジタル時代の到来に即した音作りを目指すため、ブラックモンはメンバーを次々とリストラ……。仕舞いに３人組となったキャメオは、86年に「ワード・アップ」の特大ヒットを放つ。ブラックモンの野卑なヴォーカル・ワークとリズム・ボックスのシンプル極まりない硬質なビートをベースにしたデジタル・ファンク・サウンドで、キャメオは大成功を収めたのである。そして、当時細々と生きながらえていた往年のファンク・バンドたちがこのサウンド・スタイルにこぞって飛びつき、キャメオ・サウンドは80年代ファンクの代名詞にまでなったのだ。
    今なお時代の滋養を貪欲に摂取し続けているブラックモン——彼の絶倫ヴァイタリティは、いかなる人間の想像をも超越する。
