    California EAR Unitカリフォルニア・イアー・ユニット

    California EAR Unitは現代室内楽の分野において、もっとも新鮮かつ独創的な響きをもつ集団のひとつである。ロサンジェルス出身で非常に評価の高い指揮者、Rand Steigerに率いられ、ヴィルトゥオーゾ・パーカッショニストのAmy Knolesを中心としたアンサンブル作品を演奏する。これらの緻密な楽曲は、きっちりと作曲された作品と自由な即興を一糸乱れず繋ぎ合わせ、それを名人芸の演奏で聴かせることの出来るこのグループの才能を見せつけてくれる。Knolesは基本的なドラムキットに加え、各種ベルに木製ブロック、さらには金属板などをも含むその変幻自在のキットから、圧倒されるほど多彩な音響効果を生み出すことが出来る。Steigerの筆による作品を演奏している時の彼女は、それぞれのパーカッション楽器がもっているピッチを活かしてメロディ感を演出することができる。アンサンブルはここに短くパンチの効いたフレーズやヒットで参加し、これがまたKnolesのソロと見事に息が合っている。ペースを落とした演奏では彼らはこの世のものとは思えないような神秘的な唸りを生み出すことができ、その一方で彼らの即興演奏は簡潔でウィットに富み、この爽快な音楽体験をさらに増幅してくれるのだ。
