    ビバップ・ピアノの創始者と言っても過言ではないジャズ・ピアニスト。生粋のニューヨーカーであり10代の頃より地元ＮＹのジャズ・シーンに出入りしながら、ハーレムの小さなクラブを発祥地に52番街で確立されるビバップに影響を受け、自身のスタイルを模索していく。そして以前より切望していたチャーリー・パーカーの専属ピアニストの地位を獲得。パーカーとしばらく活動をともにするが精神に異常をきたし、51年に精神病院に送られてしまう。62年、肺結核を患ったパウエルは４年後に息を引き取った。
